| Commander / Founder of Veterans Helping Veterans & Others spent four years in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. His travel across the country brought him upon many heartbreaking sights that involved both veterans and civilians. He recalls having to talk with children who lost their fathers in the war. He seen poverty, death and hardships first hand. He made up his mind that upon his discharge from the military that he would not stop serving his country. He saw things he didn't like and wanted to do something to help prevent others from facing it. He felt his service to his country and community didn't end upon his discharge from the military, it began upon his enlistment in the Air Force and continued the day he was honorably discharged. Upon his return home to the Portsmouth area he and his wife became very active in the community in helping the area youth. He took over his old boy scout troop, became director of Big Brother & Sister, founded Kids For Christ Foundation, Community Center Outreach and became very involved in his church. While working as a guard in the Ohio prisons and later driving a school bus for many years, he would go to Juvenal. Court to help the youth. He went to the county jail to talk to troubled youth, the local schools to give talks, visited a children's home and worked closely with a Children Service Counselor in helping abused, neglected and needy children. He had summer camps, Christmas Programs and opened up a Child Abuse Center in Portsmouth. He and his wife traveled across the country looking for help for homeless children. He was named Outstanding Citizen of the year and was presented with a award, US and Christian Flag at a special dinner held for him by the community. He has received several awards, citations and certificates and was able to meet with Roy Rogers who commended him on his work and made a recording to advertise for him. He wrote a book entitled, Suffer The Little Children, and made appearances on TV and radio to raise funds for local needy children. After forming the Kids For Christ Foundation, the program was so well liked that ministers in other countries started the program in their areas. He opened a farm in the West Portsmouth area to give children a place to meet, play and have camps. People come up to him today that was in his programs and thank him for helping them many years ago at his camps and meetings. He's had dinners and helped the needy for may years in the community in which he lives. He has helped homeless, needy veterans and others through their food pantry, clothing give away and looks for ways to make life a little easier for our veterans. He has build web pages to promote his work in hopes of gaining the support he needs to help local homeless, needy veterans and others. He is working to get a thrift store open to help bring in much needed funds to keep food in the food pantry and help support the organization. His life has been dedicated to serving others in his community and other parts of the world. He is a member of VVA, American Legion and a life time member of the AMVET's and the DAV's. He has fought many battles for a lot of people. He has made a stand against things that he felt was wrong for his community and things have changed for the good because of it. There are those who don't care for him because of the toes he has stepped on in getting things done. Veterans Helping Veterans & Others now has over 700 members and thousands of people have been helped over the years since it's beginning. When the VA and others have turned veterans down and could not help them and their family, V.H.V.O. has give them a helping hand. Thanks to our Commander our veterans have a place to come for food, clothing and other needs. Men, women and children have been helped during Christmas when they may not have had one otherwise and through out the year. He doesn't take the credit for his work, he gives it all to the Lord, the volunteers that are and have been involved and all those who have sponsored him. He says, "Without God he is nothing, but with God all things are possible". He has four children, nine grandchildren and one step grandchild. He said he is what we call a poor rich man. He said all he wants out of life is to see his family saved and to make heaven his home |
