Expeditionary Unit, 1st Marine Division.

Jonathan enlisted in the Marine Corps May 28, 2002, and
attended the School of Infantry during Sept. 2002, where he

helicopter went down on
January 26, 2005.

His awards included the National Defense Service Medal, the
Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Sea Service
Deployment Ribbon.

In memory and in honor of Lance Cpl. Jonathan E. Etterling,
Veterans Helping Veterans & Others sends care packages to the
troops each month
As a little boy, Jonathan
always liked playing army.
He said when he grew up
he wanted to join the
Marines and fight for his
country.  Pictured is

SPC. Pollitt, William
SPC. William Pollitt  {right}  is now back home
with his family, friends and loved ones.  He
made it a point to stop by the thrift store to
thank everyone for the care packages he
received while in Iraq.  He said how important
it was for him and the others to hear from us
and to receive the Jonathan Etterling
Memorial Care Packages.  {Will} William spent
the day with us at the thrift store moving
furniture and things to sale.  William is out
now and happy to be back home.  Welcome
home Will, we salute you on a job well done in
service to your community and country.
Letter From:
SPC. Fannin, Shawn
Received on Dec. 13, 2008
The last letter we received from Sgt. Fannin
he was in Afghanistan and he didn't sound
to happy about it.  He thanked us again for
the care packages and he said he would
rather be back in Iraq.  A few short weeks
later we attended his funeral.

Sending Cards and Letters to The Troops
We need cards and letters from you, the American people who support
our troops. Please consider working with your office, school, church or
organization to make cards or write letters to include in care packages
sent overseas. The troops are especially touched by homemade cards
from children, or letters that let them know what's going on back home:
what books, movies, and music are coming out, or what your day-to-day
life is like. Or write a letter to let them know what you're doing here at
home to support the troops!

Guidelines:

* Address cards and letters to "Dear Soldier."

* Please do not seal cards and letters in individual envelopes for delivery
to the troops. Instead, place cards and letters inside a larger mailing
envelope to send to V.H.V.O. Care Packages.

* Cards and letters must be handwritten, not typed.

*Photo copies of the same letter will not be accepted. One copy of the
“Dear Soldier” letter will be included in a care package and the
duplicates will be discarded.

* Please send cards and letters of support that are unique and
thoughtful; it means so much to the men and women defending our
freedom.
When you become a Care
Package sponsor:

*  Your name is put inside each
    care package you sponsor.
*  You receive a nice certificate
    showing your support of the
    troops.
*  Send your picture to us and it
will be displayed on our web
    site to encourage others to
    get behind our troops.
