Mike Bell, Coordinator at Daymar College, had one thing in mind when he
decided to become a homeless veteran for three days in March, our needy
veterans.  He had heard of Veterans Helping Veterans & Others for quite
sometime.  He did some research on the organization for the last several months
and he decided to meet the Commander / Founder of the organization, John D.
Foster.  He liked what he learned about them and what he saw and decided to
give his support.  On his visit to their food pantry he saw that the pantry was in
need of food.  He and a student at the college put their thoughts together and
decided that Mike was going to be a homeless vet to fill up the pantry in memory
and honor of Jonathan E. Etterling who was K.I.A. in Iraq in 2005 and Tony
Applegate who was K.I.A. during Operation Desert Storm in 1991, both were
local soldiers.  The food drive became the, "Etterling - Applegate Memorial
Canned Food Drive."

They set a goal of 5,000 food items.  At the end of the event they reached over
4,000 and by the end of the next day they reached their goal of 5,000 food
items for, "Jonathan Etterling Memorial Food Pantry."

Not only did they set a goal for the food pantry, but they set a goal of $1,000.
for the Jonathan Etterling Memorial Scholarship Fund and they reached it early on
the second day.

Mr. Bell said V.H.V.O. is a great organization that has done a lot for the veterans
over the past seven years on their own and it is time they receive the help they
deserve for veterans.  He said he intends to do all he can to help and he
encourages everyone to get behind them as well.

Below are pictures of the event that took place on March 16, 17, 18, 2012.  We
give everyone a special thanks for supporting the event.  It is because of people
like you who make our work possible for our veterans.

Memorial Scholarship Fund
On behalf of Lance Cpl. Jonathan Etterling and his family, thanks to all those who took part
in helping to raise Mike's goal of $1,000 for the Scholarship Fund.  Because of your
support, a student from Jonathan's school will be able to further their education in
honor and memory of Jonathan.  He would be proud to know that veterans are being
helped and students are furthering their education in his memory.
